Where to Begin with New Years Resolutions
With the start of 2026 upon us, it’s time to take another crack at New Year’s resolutions! Sure, you can set goals any day of the week, but it feels monumental to start something new when the year turns over.
Any personal goal can work as a resolution, but it helps to set yourself a few guidelines. Namely, making your goal measurable and setting timelines can help keep you on track while also adding a bit of that feel-good sense of accomplishment – for example, instead of saying “I’m going to read more”, try something like “I’m going to read one novel each month”.
If you’re having trouble coming up with a resolution that feels right for you, we’re here with some suggestions to get you in the goal-setting state of mind!
Cook (and eat) at home
In the era of takeout and food delivery apps, it’s hard to resist ordering in after a long day. Though this isn’t always a bad option, those receipts can pile up quick!
If you like to cook (or want to get better at it), try making your New Years resolution to do more of it! Give yourself a goal like “I’m going to make two home-cooked meals per week” – whatever number feels good to you.
Don’t forget to set yourself up for success with some preparations that’ll make it easier!
- Make a list of staple meals and keep the ingredients for them on hand.
- Prepare things ahead of time when possible to take the strain off the night of your planned dinner – anything from marinading chicken to freezing cookie dough.
- Recruit your kids or partner to help with cooking! Delegating tasks can take some of the pressure off.
Make time for family![]()

Whether you’re a new mom, expecting, or a longtime veteran of parenthood, it’s important to make time for your family. Make a goal to spend some quality time together, and get everybody involved! Whatever works for you, your family, and your budget, the important thing is the quality time and memories you get out of it.
Here are some ideas to try working into your schedule:
- Set up a weekly family game night, whether it’s board games, charades, or even something digital.
- Make time for a special monthly outing: a nice dinner, a trip to a local museum or park, or whatever else your family might enjoy!
- Plan a family vacation! Get everybody involved so you can all have fun: pick a place, research activities, and give everyone something to look forward to!
Practice self-care
If there’s one thing that’s always true as the years go by, it’s that self-care is vital to living a happy, healthy life. Make sure you’ve got enough “me time” scheduled – even busy moms need a day off now and again!
When it comes to relaxing, don’t forget the importance of comfortable clothes that fit your needs. Whether you’re looking for cozy hats and socks to keep you warm this winter or a stylish, functional hospital gown for your pregnancy, Giftgowns has you covered.
Connect with friends
Family aren’t the only ones who deserve your time and attention! It’s quick and easy to shoot a text message to a friend, but if you’re looking to reconnect or really focus on those relationships, try making this your resolution.
Connect with your friends and make plans to meet up – maybe once a month, you can schedule a time to get together for a nice dinner or a fancy brunch. Something that gives you the time to unwind, catch up, and feel connected to the people who matter to you.
Reduce screentime

There’s no question about it: screens dominate our lives, from the computers we use at work to the phones and televisions we turn to for entertainment. If you’re getting screen fatigue or just want to give yourself a breather, try reducing your screentime as your resolution.
Set a goal and try to keep under it – maybe two hours a day should be your limit. Your phone may have screentime settings built in and will even help you limit how much time you can spend on specific apps (for when you need a little help to stop doomscrolling)!
Another way to reduce screentime for this goal is to pick up another hobby that can replace it! If you’re used to scrolling on Instagram first thing in the morning or when you’ve got a few minutes free, try picking up a book instead or just enjoying some quiet time with your coffee.
Learn something new
Looking for something fun to do with your free time? Do you have an overstuffed collection of bookmarks featuring crafts you’d love to try for yourself? In 2026, why not try to pick up a new skill so you can do exactly that?
Get some resources together, whether they’re classes, YouTube tutorials, or something else entirely, and try to devote a few hours a week to learning something new. A language, crochet, baking, pottery – as long as it’s something that excites you, it’s more than worth the time.
Keep a record of your life
Everybody carries a camera in their pocket these days, but what about using that to actually take note of your life? Picking up a hobby like scrapbooking is a fun and creative way to log your life and journeys as they happen. Children growing up, special vacations, impactful moments… anything you think is worth remembering, record it!
And if scrapbooking is a bit intimidating (trust me, I know), give journalling a try! In either case, try devoting some time each day to working on your project, and before you know it, you’ll have a record to look back on whenever you want to reflect on those special memories.
Now you're ready to give it a try
I hope this has given you some fun ideas for how to tackle New Years resolutions for 2026! Remember: these are supposed to be fun goals for making your life a little better, so don’t stress if you miss a day here or there! Do your best, and the results will follow. Happy New Year!
